ART FOR FAITH'S SAKE
You can see something of what we do at Zambia International Theological College (ZITC) through the pictures included here, of a recent pastors’ wives retreat held in our home and artwork done at the college. We stress the arts as a way to experience divinity and learn theology. We celebrate creativity and individual expression. We acknowledge that spirituality is a profoundly mysterious well that needs to be explored and accessed for a closer walk with God and a more powerful way to spread the gospel of Christ.
Sandra’s course last term on “Christ and Salvation” allowed the students for the first time in their lives to give thought and expression to their faith through chalk art. With paper and chalk, leftovers from previous years of teaching, but timely and useful now, Sandra gave the students permission to be courageous in exerting culturally sensitive ways to depict faith through their own unique spiritual lenses. The supplies were limited but sufficient for the task.
A highlight for the college was the moment Sandra asked all the faculty and students to gather and listen as the students, one by one, stood by their creations and expressed in words what they drew with chalk. We all sensed that the pictures conveyed more powerfully than words the good news of God’s love. A lesson well received and acknowledged. It reminded me of an article I read years ago entitled “Art for Faith’s Sake.”
